6th Grade vs Faculty

Mr. Slater, our amazing physical education teacher, organized 40 minutes of fun for our entire school community this morning. Our 6th grade worked together to try to beat the Riverside faculty in a game of curling.  As with all activities Mr. Slater presents – the game had a slight creative twist  – our bodies functioned as the stones.   Click on the video below to catch some of the action…

Holiday Gathering

Riverside faculty and retirees gathered today for a holiday luncheon. As I sat in their company I couldn’t help but think about the thousands of lives they have touched.  These fine educators and so many like them are truly gifts - gifts for our children – gifts for our community.

Modeling Our Writing after Quality Pieces of Literature

During Mrs. Iannello’s 4th grade Power Up group, students are studying the structure of literature in an effort to create more comprehensive writing pieces.  The focus is summarizing, sequencing, and the importance of understanding an author’s perspective.  After closely examining several selections of literature the students used an app on the iPad II to create a class cumulative story. Then they began writing their own pieces.   As a final project the students are creating a mulit-media photo story.

Power Up!

Our first and second grade teachers and students are doing an outstanding job powering up on targeted skills.

The first and second grade teachers carefully reviewed student work and assessments to develop highly specific small group instruction.  Based on what the teachers discovered, they created Power Up groups that focused specifically on classifying, blending sounds, building words, and working with double vowel words.

School Wide Assembly

On Friday, November 18th we were extremely

fortunate to end our day as a school community.

Brent McCoy from Comedy That Works, brought us

an engaging 45 minute juggling/comedy act.  He

emphasized how dedication and a commitment to a

task can produce the results we desire.  Brent talked

about how important it is to remain focused on our

dreams and he discussed the importance of

“practicing.”  Click below to see some highlights of

the show.

Pre-Kindergarten

A moment in time in pre-kindergarten….
"Learn through Play Time"
A time when students use their imagination, take turns,
share, and focus on being a good friend.  Play time is also a
valuable time for teachers as they model appropriate
behaviors and engage in "teachable moments."

All the Colors of the Earth

As part of the guidance program and our quarter two focus on empathy, Mrs. Sadlocha read a book titled, All the Colors of the Earth, by Sheila Hamanaka with our kindergarten students.  As a follow up activity the children experimented with skin tone paints to match their own skin and then created a self portrait.

Middle School Partners

Amanda Scimeca, the Middle School Library Media Specialist led a group of 7th grade students in a partnership project with our Pre-K and 2nd grade classes.  The 7th graders read to our students, conducted literacy interviews, provided donated books to the class library, and gave bookmarks and informational packets on reading for every student to take home.
